Solving the Charming Puzzles of Adventures of Lolo on NES

Game Boy

Your recent saves

Stepping back into the golden age of the Nintendo Entertainment System often brings to mind action-packed adventures or platforming heroes. But sometimes, the most enduring memories come from quieter, more cerebral challenges. For many retro gamers, that challenge was the delightful, yet devilishly difficult, Adventures of Lolo.

Released by HAL Laboratory, the team that would later bring us Kirby, Adventures of Lolo wasn't about jumping on Goombas or swinging a whip. It was about thinking, planning, and sometimes, just a little bit of frantic egg-shooting. It was a puzzle game that captured the hearts (and occasionally, the frustrated sighs) of a generation.

What Exactly is Adventures of Lolo?

Part of the larger Japanese Eggerland series, Adventures of Lolo introduced North American and European players to a charming world filled with tricky rooms. You play as Lolo, a small, blue, puffball-like hero (sound familiar?). Your mission? To rescue your beloved Princess Lala from the clutches of the evil King Egger.

This rescue mission isn't a straight path through a castle. Instead, it's a journey through 50 distinct puzzle rooms spread across 10 floors. Each room is a self-contained challenge you must solve to progress.

The Core Puzzle Loop: Hearts, Gems, and Exits

The basic goal in every single room of Adventures of Lolo is deceptively simple: collect all the Heart Frames scattered around the screen. Once you've gathered every last heart, a treasure chest containing a Gem will unlock. Grabbing the Gem then opens the exit door, allowing you to move on to the next puzzle.

Sounds easy, right? Not so fast. Between you and those hearts, and between you and the exit, stand a variety of obstacles and enemies, all eager to stop Lolo in his tracks.

Navigating the Dangers and Using Your Wits

Lolo's abilities are limited but crucial. He can move up, down, left, and right, and push certain blocks. His primary offensive/defensive tool is the ability to shoot a limited number of shots, which turn specific enemies into temporary eggs.

These eggs are incredibly versatile:

  • You can push them around to block paths or create bridges over water.
  • They act as temporary barriers against certain moving enemies.
  • After a short time, the enemy hatches back out of the egg, ready to resume its patrol or attack.

You'll encounter various enemy types, each with unique behaviors:

  • Snakes (Snakesy): Often stationary, blocking paths until egged.
  • Gopans: Wander around, harmless unless you touch them. Egg-able.
  • Rocky: Stationary until you align with them, then they charge. Egg-able.
  • Medusas: Stationary, instantly kill Lolo if he crosses their line of sight. Cannot be egged, must be blocked.
  • Don Medusas: Move slowly but also instantly kill Lolo if he crosses their line of sight. Cannot be egged, must be blocked.
  • Lepers: Wander randomly. Egg-able.
  • Skull (Alma): Stationary until all Hearts are collected, then they chase Lolo. Cannot be egged, must be blocked.

Some rooms also grant Lolo temporary special abilities, like the Hammer (to break rocks), the Bridge (to cross water), or the Arrow (to change enemy direction), adding another layer to the puzzles.

Losing a life happens if an enemy touches you (unless they are just blocking) or if you restart a room because you've trapped yourself. And trust us, you will trap yourself. Often.

The Challenge and the Charm

Adventures of Lolo is renowned for its ingenious level design. Each room is a self-contained logic puzzle. You have to figure out the correct sequence of moves, block pushes, and egg shots to collect the hearts without getting cornered or killed.

Early rooms are simple tutorials, but the difficulty ramps up significantly. Later levels require complex planning, precise timing, and understanding how every enemy and object interacts. That feeling of finally solving a particularly stubborn room after multiple attempts? Pure retro gaming satisfaction.

Critics at the time praised its simple concept, addictive gameplay, and surprisingly deep strategic elements. It wasn't flashy, but it was smart and incredibly rewarding. Its charm lay in its straightforward presentation and the sheer mental workout it provided.

Where to Play Adventures of Lolo Today

If you're feeling that nostalgic pull or are curious to experience this classic puzzle game, you have a few options:

  1. Nintendo Switch Online: Adventures of Lolo is available as part of the NES library included with the Nintendo Switch Online subscription. This is arguably the easiest and most accessible legitimate way to play it on modern hardware.
  2. Original NES Hardware: If you still have your trusty NES and a physical cartridge, you can play it the authentic way!
  3. Virtual Console: The game was previously available on Virtual Console for Wii, 3DS, and Wii U, though these platforms are less accessible now.

While emulation exists, playing via legitimate means like Nintendo Switch Online is the recommended way to experience the game today.

Lolo's Lasting Legacy

Adventures of Lolo was successful enough to spawn several sequels on the NES and Game Boy. While some were compilations or variations, they continued Lolo's puzzle-solving quest.

Perhaps the most surprising part of Lolo's legacy is his and Lala's appearances in the vastly different world of Kirby. The characters Lololo and Lalala, who often appear as recurring mini-bosses or stage hazards in the Kirby series, are direct descendants of Lolo and Lala from the Eggerland games. It's a fun little nod that connects these two distinct HAL Laboratory franchises.

Final Thoughts

Adventures of Lolo might not have the same immediate name recognition as Mario or Link, but for those who played it back in the day, it holds a special place. It's a game that respects your intelligence, challenges your patience, and rewards your perseverance. It's a perfect example of how simple mechanics can combine to create complex, engaging puzzles that stand the test of time. Dust off your grey controller (or fire up your Switch) and give it a try – just be prepared to get stumped!
